The AltaVista browser has been a mainstay of the World Wide Web right from the start. But the emergence of such competition as Yahoo!, Lycos, Excite and HotBot has forced the pioneers of the field to spread out.
AltaVista has now done that with its new AltaVista Search one-lick access -- which debuted this week -- to 90 percent of the available Web pages, as well as breaking news, newsgroups, discussions, shopping, images and audio.
In essence, AltaVista has become a portal, not just a browser.
